Creamy Buttery Mashed Potatoes are easy to make – and there are hundreds of similar recipes you can find online. But this particular recipe, that I’m about to introduce to you today, has an unexpected secret ingredient.

It’s something I’ve been adding to my mashed potato recipe since I first hosted Thanksgiving dinner in my apartment for my friends, as a young college student (many many years ago).

It adds a fresh creamy taste that balances out the buttery richness of the rest of the recipe and gives these potatoes a light and pillowy texture across your tongue.

Had enough suspense? The secret ingredient I use is sour cream.

Sour cream adds a light and fresh taste to the potatoes – while introducing an additional source of moisture that makes this recipe smooth and buttery. And don’t worry about the sourness of the cream – you can’t even notice it and it definitely goes well with the rest of the ingredients used in these mashed potatoes.
