What is Hwachae?
Hwachae (화체) is Korean for punch. It’s traditionally made with a combination of canned fruits, milk, Chilsung Cider with freshly scooped watermelon balls. And in this Hwachae recipe, we’ll stick as close to the original formula that they used in Korea – but with one slight twist (condensed milk).
Key Elements Of This Recipe
- Half of a Whole Watermelon: A scooped out half of watermelon is the perfect vessel for this cold Korean dessert.
- Chilsung Cider: This is the Korean version of Sprite. It’s a bit crisper and less sweet than US lemon-lime soda and is perfect for this recipe.
- Milkis: Traditional Korean Milk Soda. It has a unique milky taste that adds a level of creaminess to this dessert.
