What Is The Best Grill To Use For Smoked Burgers?
Any quality smoker capable of long smoking is good, but my smoker of choice is this Traeger Ironwood XL. It’s a bit pricey, but in my opinion, it’s one of the most advanced and efficient smokers out there – with its WiFi connected control panel & “Super Smoke” feature. This is the smoker I’ll be using in my recipe.

How Long To Smoke Burgers At 225°F?
Smoking burgers take a bit longer than grilling them at high heat. You’ll want to set your smoker to 225°F (also activate “super smoke mode” if you have a Traeger Grill) and cook your burgers nice and slow. It’ll take about 40-50 minutes at 225°F, but trust me, the results are worth it.
Key Elements Of This Recipe
- Ground Beef: You’ll want the 80/20 blend so that your smoked burgers have a good mix of meat and savory fat.
- Traeger Garlic & Chili Pepper Rub: The perfect seasoning for that smokey and slightly sweet taste.
The Ingredients for Traeger Smoked Burgers

- 1 pound Ground Beef (80/20)
- 1 Egg Yolk
- 3 tablespoons Traeger Garlic & Chili Pepper Rub
- 2 tablespoons Thyme
- 1 tablespoon A1 Steak Sauce
- Your choice of burger fixings
The Equipment Needed
- Traeger Ironwood Wood Pellet Grill (or any other quality smoker)
- Large Mixing Bowl
How To Make Traeger Smoked Burgers
These smoked burgers are really simple to make. You start with the right mix of spices in your all beef 80/20 ground meat. Then you slow smoke the patties on your Traeger grill at 225°F, until you hit the proper internal temperature of 165°F. Lastly you assemble your burger with all of your favorite burger fixings, including freshly cut tomatoes, lettuce and pickles.
Lastly, if you want to be a little extra, take that whole burger and place it on the grill for just a couple minutes – so the whole thing can be smoked!
Craft Your Burger Patties

In a large mixing bowl add in your ground beef, egg yolk, Traeger rub, Thyme and A1 steak sauce.

Give everything a good mix with your hands, until all ingredients are fully incorporated.

Then, form roughly 5 inch wide burger patties, that are approximately 1 inch in thickness. Place them on a large tray and let them rest for 5 minutes.
Smoke Your Burger Patties
Fire up your smoker to 225°F (also activate “super smoke mode” if you have a Traeger Grill).
Place your patties directly on the grill and let it smoke until the internal temperature of the burgers hit 165°F.

This smoking process should take about 40-50 minutes and you can flip it once at around the 30 minute mark (optional).
If you want to add sliced cheese to your burger, you can do that at the end of the smoking cycle. (It should only take about 45-60 seconds for the cheese to melt on a near finished burger patty.)
Assemble Your Smoked Burger
Around the time your burgers are completing their smoke, place your hamburger buns directly onto your grill and let them toast for about 2-3 minutes.

Then, plate your buns and apply a layer of your favorite burger sauce onto the bottom bun. (I’m using the Kinder Classic Burger Sauce.)

Afterwards, take one of your smoked burger patties and place it directly on the bottom bun and top with tomatoes, pickles and any other burger fixings you’d like.

Serve immediately and enjoy!
Extra: If you’d like to be a bit extra – place the whole assembled burger into the smoker for about 2-3 minutes for that extra smokey flavor.
