Making Mulled Wine is incredibly simple.
Start by preparing your spices and slicing your orange.
Then in a stock pot, pour in your bottle of wine. Turn on the heat to low and allow the wine to come to a low simmer.
Afterwards, add in your orange slices, maple syrup, whiskey and brown sugar.
Follow that up with your cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, star anise, vanilla extract and ground clove - and give it a good stir, overall.
Next, turn the heat down to the lowest setting possible and simmer the wine, uncovered, for about 1 hour - stirring every 15 minutes. This hour of simmering is important for all of these complex flavors to infuse into the wine altogether.
Pro Tip: Do not let your mulled wine come to a boil - you are not cooking this wine, but rather just steeping your spices into it.
Lastly, remove from the heat and strain using a fine mesh strainer or carefully ladle just the wine into your serving glasses.
Serve your mulled wine warm, in large coffee mugs and garnish with a slice of orange and/or cinnamon sticks.
