How To Make Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy

  • This classic TV dinner can be made in 3 easy phases. First, you craft your steak patties, then you make your gravy, and lastly you braise your steaks in the mushroom gravy until they are perfectly tender and soft.

Form Your Salisbury Steak Patties

  • In a large bowl, grate 1/2 of your onion, as finely as you can.
  • Then, in a separate mixing bowl, add in your ground beef and your egg.
  • Afterwards, add in your panko bread crumbs, milk, all of the remaining steak patty seasonings and give it all a good mix.
  • In a large tray, form roughly 5 inch wide Salisbury steak patties, that are approximately 1 inch in thickness.
  • Take your sauce pan, and on high heat, sear both sides of your steak patties - and then set the patties aside.
  • Pro Tip: At this stage, you don't need to cook your steaks all the way through - we are just looking to get a good sear on the outside and to form a crust.

Craft Your Salisbury Steak Gravy

  • Put your sauce pan back on the stove on medium heat and add in a splash of olive oil and a few pads of butter.
  • Once the butter has melted, add in your mushrooms & 1/2 an onion (finely grated) and sauté them until they just start to brown.
  • Following that, add in your beef stock, browning sauce, rosemary, salt and pepper - and give everything a good stir.
  • After a couple of minutes, add in your corn starch and vigorously stir it into the gravy until everything blends in smoothly and the sauce thickens.
  • Let it simmer and reduce slightly - at which point, add in your Salisbury steak patties.
  • Let the Salisbury steaks cook in the gravy for about 15-20 minutes - which will also cause the gravy to thicken even more.
  • Once the steaks are fully cooked (internal temperature of 165°F.), they are ready to be served.
